Fishhound.com looks like a cool site

I hadn't seen fishound.com until I saw a brochure for it in Sunriver, Oregon last week. It llooks like a really cool and useful site. I'll be signing up for an account soon as I prepare for our SALMON FLIES fishing trip in Yellowstone. I'm pretty excited about it. Just a short couple of weeks now. Hopefully the water calms down a bit.

While I was in Sunriver, OR last week for a family get-together during the Pacific Crest Sports Festival Weekend (I did a triathlon, others did other races), I had the opportunity to fish the Fall River right at the hatchery near Route 40. What a beautiful little quiet river!  I would give pretty much anything to be able to live right there in those hatchery employee houses!  Very pretty. Very quiet. My kind of place.  Recommend you take an hour or two to fish that short stretch (500 yards at the most) of river.

Idaho free fishing day

Yesterday was free fishing day in Idaho, so we took Paul out for his first real fishing trip. He did pretty good, too. I didn't get him a little Snoopy pole because I couldn't find one in town here, but we got him a $20 setup, with a full 102 pieces and a free tackle blox at ACE Hardware. It is actually a more-than-sufficient setup, and he could cast about ten feet with it...not bad for a 2 1/2 year old! But Paul preferred to throw rocks in the lake, which was expected. He wanted to stay all day, but Noah and Mommy were getting anxious, so we headed home. It was a great day for fishing, but the catching was non-existent. Hopefully the weather will cooperate for our first backyard campout!

Get your kids out there and just have fun!

Too Much Water!

Normally at the time of the year, I've packed and repacked my fly fishing gear a couple of times simply to feel like I'm doing something instead of waiting for my first fishing trip in Yellowstone.

This year is a bit different. I haven't really thought about the fishing yet because of all the flooding. With the flooding in southeast Idaho, I don't even want to think about what is going on in the park.

But I had to look! So I went to Fly Fishing In Yellowstone National Park, and the current post is "RECORDS SMASHED ! Rivers Gone Wild take pictures for posterity"

Yeah, lots of water. And the mountains still have lots of snow in them according to the Snotel sites.

Back to those thoughts of the first trip to the park for the year. We used to go on Memorial Day, until we got tired of getting snowed on so late in the year. Then we started going during Janet's Triathlon (www.janetstriathlon.org) at Hebgen Lake during the weekend of the solstice, usually around June 20. That is a fishing trip with a triathlon on Saturday morning. But this year there is just too much water and it's too dang cold to swim in....so, now triathlon and no chance of decent fishing, so no trip to Yellowstone.

The plan right now is probably over the 4th of July and then certainly for Salmon flies on July 18th....maybe we'll hit the hatch this year if things are getting off to a late start because of a late spring.
